The agency has alerted local police and the US utility, banking and transportation industries. US military bases and diplomatic missions worldwide are also being placed on high alert for the week.

The FBI gave the warning in a posting on a website and sent a message over a private law enforcement bulletin system.

It said: "A large volume of threats of undetermined reliability continues to be received and investigated by the FBI. Several of these threats make reference to the events of September 11th, 2001, and to New York City and Washington, DC".

But officials say they have no specific details outlining an impending attack in the US.

The US Embassy in Malaysia has received a "credible and specific threat" to security and will close from tomorrow until further notice, the US State Department said.

It is the second embassy in the region to be ordered closed because of terrorist fears on the eve of the anniversary of the September 11th attacks. The US Embassy in Jakarta, Indonesia, closed earlier.

The US embassy in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, has cancelled a September 11th commemorative service. An embassy spokeswoman said the service was cancelled "for security reasons".

Officials say the US Embassy in Manila is also a source of concern.
