Madrid - The traditional world of bullfighting showed its true macho colours this week when the world's first woman bullfighter admitted defeat and stepped down, Jane Walker reports. Matador de toros Ms Cristina Sanchez (27) said she was retiring from the ring not because she had lost her nerve or was afraid of bulls, or because she was too old or had been injured, but simply because the majority of her male colleagues refused to fight on the same programme as a woman and she could not compete in their macho world.
