Martin Ferris, the Sinn Féin TD for Kerry North, was arrested on suspicion of drink-driving in the early hours of this morning.
A Sinn Féin spokeswoman this afternoon told ireland.comthe deputy was stopped a random breath test checkpoint near the village of Ardfert at around 1am.
She said Deputy Ferris "does not believe that he was over the limit and is awaiting the results of the sample taken by gardaí."
She added Deputy Ferris "would be the first to be critical of anyone who would drive while over the limit. It is totally unacceptable and indefensible behaviour."
