Mr M J Nolan of Fianna Fáil has been returned to the Seanad in the by-election to fill the seat vacated by Mr Tom Hayes.
Mr Nolan beat Mr Michael Fitzgerald of Fine Gael for the Tipperary South seat. Mr Nolan was a Dáil deputy from 1982-1997 and prior to that was a Seanad member from 1981-82. He has been a member of Carlow County Council since 1979.
He is expected to take his seat when the Seanad sits this afternoon.
Deputy Hayes was elected to the Dáil in the Tipperary South by-election last summer.
