LABOUR LEADER Eamon Gilmore has accused Fianna Fáil of cowardice for not holding byelections in Donegal South West, Dublin South and Waterford.
Speaking during a visit to Donegal South West to launch the byelection campaign of Labour candidate Cllr Frank McBrearty yesterday, Mr Gilmore said it was a year to the day since a vacancy arose in that constituency.
He said there was a vacancy in Dublin South for almost 18 months over the past two years, while Waterford had been under represented for three months since the resignation of Martin Cullen.
“The people of all of these constituencies are entitled to the full level of representation . . . and it is profoundly undemocratic for Fianna Fáil and its allies to use their voting power in the Dáil to block the byelections from going ahead,” he said.
Mr Gilmore said the Government keeps saying their policies were showing results and that we could expect a return to growth shortly. “If the Government believes that it has the confidence of the people . . . . then surely it should put this to the test by having the Donegal South West byelection as early as possible.”
