An independent investigation in to the handling of the "CC" case that led to the Supreme Court ruling that the law governing sex offences against children is unconstitutional has been called for by Fine Gael and the Labour Party.

At a press conference in Dublin today, the party leaders said a plan by the Government to get a civil servant to review the procedures in the Attorney General's office were inadequate.

Instead, Enda Kenny and Pat Rabbitte want an independent investigation under the Commission of Investigations Act 2004.

Any investigation must "establish the facts of what exactly went wrong in the Office of the Attorney General, the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, the Department of Justice, as well as at Cabinet level," the two men said in a joint statement.

Mr Kenny and Mr Rabbitte also released a copy of a letter they are sending the Director of Public Prosecutions seeking clarification about how many for prosecutions for sexual offences are due before the courts under the law struck down by the Supreme Court.
