Fine Gael will this afternoon publish an ambitious new energy policy document which makes a number of recommendations about the use of green energy sources.
The Energy for the Future plan proposes that the majority of buses and other vehicles operated by the State should be converted to run on biofuels within five years.
It also outlines new targets for energy efficiency in homes and businesses which will be funded by grants for insulation and other energy-saving measures.
If elected to form the next government Fine Gael says it will increase grant aid and support for firms developing biofuels and set legally binding targets for the use of alternative energy and energy efficiencies in buildings.
Cars with high emission rates will face higher VRT and motor taxes under the proposals.
It will set a target for electricity generation from renewable energy sources, such as wind, above and beyond the current EU-mandated targets.
