Fine Gael plans to table a Dáil motion calling on the Minister for Environment John Gormley to scrap a plan to build a waste incinerator at Poolbeg in Dublin.
The motion - which is due to be debated tomorrow evening - insists that there is no electoral mandate for the project and demands the Minister use his powers under the Waste Management Act to force Dublin City Council to alter its plan.
The motion notes that the vast majority of the TDs elected for the Dublin region are opposed to the plan and that it is contrary to the stated policy of the elected members of Dublin City Council.
Mr Gormley, who is also a TD in the constituency, was one of more than 2,000 individuals and environmental groups who lodged objections to the application with An Bord Pleanála last October.
The council last week gave formal notice of its intention to enter into a contract with Dublin Waste to Energy Limited, the consortium chosen to build and operate a municipal waste incinerator.
The council's application for the incinerator, which would burn 600,000 tonnes of waste annually, remains before An Bord Pleanála, which is expected to make a decision on the project later this year.
