Ford Fiesta cars built between July 1995, and June 1996, are being examined as a precautionary measure for possible brakehose damage. About 66,900 were registered in the UK in that period and 4,183 in the Republic.
A Ford spokeswoman in Cork said a small number of cases had arisen in the UK but there had been none in the Republic. As a precautionary measure it was contacting customers who had bought the model so that the cars could be checked. Customers could visit their Ford dealer and have the check done. This could be carried out in less than an hour.
The complaint in the UK was that the brake-hose was liable to damage during servicing or repair. However, she stressed that there was no danger involved as the car had a dual-circuit braking system.
