Police in the North have arrested a fifth man in connection with the murder of Co Monaghan teenager Jason McGovern while on a night out in Omagh.

The 21-year-old suspect will be questioned along with three other young men still being held by the PSNI. Another man (21) arrested on Wednesday has been released on bail.

Mr McGovern (19), Tydavnet, Co Monaghan, went to Omagh last Sunday for a night out with friends. He was punched outside a pub on John Street and assaulted again at a car park on Kevlin Road.

Later, he took a taxi to a friend’s house in Mullan, near Emyvale, Co Monaghan, where he was found dead on Monday. A postmortem revealed he had died from a head injury.

Meanwhile, it has been announced that £10,000 has been secured for a project to make Omagh safer for young people socialising at night.

On the Friday before Christmas, six police officers were injured and 14 people arrested for offences including assault, disorderly behaviour and criminal damage.

Local councillor Sorcha McAnespy said busloads of young partygoers descended on the town every weekend from “the nine counties of Ulster”.
