Nadi - Fijians vote today to restore democracy in an election expected to be dominated by deposed ethnic Indian prime minister, Mr Mahendra Chaudhry, toppled in a racially-motivated coup last year.
The race issue has fuelled three coups and a military mutiny in Fiji since 1987 and the bitter divisions between indigenous Fijians and descendants of indentured Indian sugar cane workers run deep. Many in the former British colony worry that a Chaudhry re-election could ignite new racial violence in the South Pacific islands.
