A file has been sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions on a collision between an articulated truck and a school coach in Dublin last November. The truck driver received serious head injuries, and 48 of the 70 boys were treated in hospital.
Initial reports suggested that two youths riding ponies bareback across the Chapelizod bypass in west Dublin had caused the lorry to jack-knife, which in turn caused the collision. The alleged circumstances prompted strong criticism in the Dail of certain local authorities for failing to implement the Control of Horses Act.
A Garda spokesman said the investigation had established that two youths, with a pony, were nearby at the time of the accident on November 5th, but it was "unclear if their presence caused the lorry to jackknife".
