A man (19) arrested in connection with the hoax bomb alert on a plane diverted to Shannon airport has been released by gardaí without charge.

A file has been sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions in relation to the incident on board the Delta Airlines flight from Frankfurt to Atlanta on Sunday.

The flight was forced to land in Shannon after a note was found in the toilet indicating a bomb was on board. Passengers were removed, interviewed and fingerprinted before the flight took off at lunchtime yesterday.

Shannon gardaí arrested the German student shortly after 12.15 p.m. yesterday. The student at Tampa University in Florida had already checked in to continue the flight to Atlanta when gardaí arrested him at the airport.

He was was arrested on suspicion of communicating a false message, thereby endangering an aircraft, under Section 3 of the Air Navigation and Transport Act, 1975.
