The explanatory leaflet launched today to publicise the government's new electronic voting system must be immediately withdrawn, according to Fine Gael.

The party claims an image on the pamphlet of a voter pressing the Fianna Fáil button at a new electronic voting booth is a "clear visual prompt" to vote for that party.

"Additional proof of the bias of those introducing the new system is evident in the demonstration screen on the electronic voting website. In the sample ballot paper offered for the 'European Elections' there is no Fine Gael candidate listed," party spokesman Mr Bernard Allen said.

"This botched and biased launch shows clearly why an independent body should handle the introduction and management of the new voting system," he added.
