THE Minister for Social Welfare, Mr De Rossa, is the first Coalition leader to directly disown the remarks made by the Tanaiste's special adviser, Mr Fergus Finlay, that all party talks, without Sinn Fein participation, would not be worth a penny candle.

The Democratic Left lender said yesterday that Mr Finlay was wrong when he made the remarks on the Channel Four programme Dispatches last week.

Speaking on Radio an Gaeltachta, Mr De Rossa said he totally disagreed with Mr Finlay's statement which, he added, was not in accordance with Government policy.

"Mr Finlay has a great intellect but he was wrong on this issue," said Mr De Rossa.
