Fire brigade units and emergency drainage services were called in to deal with serious flooding in parts of Clontarf in north Dublin last night.

Up to an inch-and-a-half of rain fell in the space of a few hours, and 28 homes in the Kincora Court area were flooded by up to 18 inches of water, which had to be pumped out, Dublin City Council said.

A spokeswoman said the flooding was due to the high levels of rain that fell yesterday and in recent days.  The drainage system could not cope with the high volume of water, she said.

Dublin City Council has been assisting with the clean-up and providing support services to the affected residents today.  Insurance valuers were also due to assess the damage.
