A fire which caused extensive damage to the vestry of an 18th century church in Co Kildare is being treated as suspicious by gardai. Fire crews prevented the remainder of the Protestant church, near Castletown House in Celbridge, from being destroyed. One fire fighter was taken to hospital after part of the roof collapsed. He was later discharged.
The alarm was raised shortly before 2 a.m. yesterday by a passer-by and three units of the fire brigades from Maynooth and Leixlip went to the scene.
Services are still held in the church.
