A man in his 50s has undergone the first double-lung transplant ever undertaken in the State at the Mater Hospital in Dublin.
He underwent surgery early this morning, a statement from the hospital said. The surgery took around five hours.
The man, who is in his mid-50s, suffered from emphysema. He is now in a stable condition in intensive care at the Mater.
A spokesman for the hospital said the operation would not have been possible without the generosity of the organ donor and their family. Up until last year, transplant patients had to travel to the Freeman Hospital in Newcastle to be operated on.
The hospital said it would not be issuing further media statements and asked the media to respect the man's right to privacy.
Last year, the first single-lung transplant in the State was carried out at the Mater on a woman from Limerick.
