The first morning of Operation Freeflow, the annual Garda campaign to ease the flow of traffic through Dublin city, has been deemed a success despite poor weather overnight.

"Considering horrendous conditions overnight and some localised flooding in Dublin, the first morning of Operation Freeflow went well," a spokeswoman for AA Roadwatch told ireland.comthis morning.

Motorists have been warned about false expectations from Operation Freeflow.

Dart services between Bray and Greystones were suspended for a time this morning due to flooding on the tracks. Full service resumed shortly after 8am. Flooding also caused problems in Blackrock and on Knockmaroon Hill connecting Castleknock and Chapelizod.

Outside the Operation Freeflow area, traffic was very heavy on the N11 between Kilpedder and Fassaroe this morning, with 20 minute delays in each direction.

More than 160 probationary gardaí from the Garda College, Templemore, have been drafted in to help with the enforcement of Operation Freeflow.

Gardaí say they will focus on areas such as quality bus corridors, Luas junctions, major traffic junctions and Nitelink services.

Operation Freeflow, which is in its 11th year, aims to alleviate traffic congestion in the Dublin area in the run-up to Christmas and includes the deferral and rescheduling of some building works that may interfere with traffic.

However, key infrastructural works such as the M50 upgrade will continue.
