Newark - Five people escaped injury after a Federal Express MD-11 cargo plane crash-landed, overturned and burst into flames at Newark airport in New Jersey yesterday. Almost 12 hours after the crash at 1.35 a.m. local time, pieces of the charred, smoky aircraft lay scattered across a runway, destroyed in the impact and fire, and the fuselage was missing both wings and the tail section. The two crew members and three passengers crawled to safety through a cockpit window, a spokesman for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey said. The airport was closed for several hours. - (Reuter)
