Five people were killed and another man was seriously injured in road traffic accidents over the bank holiday weekend.
A 27-year old man was killed yesterday when his motorcycle collided with a car about two miles north of Listowel. It is understood the man was trying to overtake the car when the collision occurred at around 3.30pm.
He was thrown off his bike and pronounced dead at the scene at the townland of Bunagara. Gardaí were last night contacting relatives of the man. They were investigating the accident and appealed for any witnesses to come forward.
A woman in her 70s was killed in a two-car crash between Curtis Cross and Balrath Cross at Flemington in Co Meath. The accident happened around 3.35pm on the N2. The driver of the second car was taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda where his condition was described as serious.
On Saturday morning, Dean Gilsenan (17) from Kilmainhamwood, Co Meath was killed when his car went out of control and crashed near Moynalty.
On Friday, two men lost their lives in accidents in Co Tipperary. Joseph Connors from Lacey Avenue in Templemore died after being hit by a lorry on the Roscrea road. He was in his early 60s. Michael Hasset (81) from Coosane, Birdhill Co Tipperary died following a three-car collision at Birdhill on Friday evening.
The National Safety Council has warned that summer months are traditionally the highest for road fatalities. This summer the council is planning to mount a major campaign aimed at encouraging motorists to pay more attention to road safety issues.
