Two motorcyclists were killed in separate road accidents in Limerick and Cavan on Sunday night, while a motorist who was involved in one of the collisions remained in a critical condition yesterday.
Denis Ahern (26), Sycamore Heights, Patrickswell, Co Limerick, died after his motorbike was involved in a head-on collision with a car at Ballybrown, Clarina, at about 10.10pm on Sunday. He was a married man and father of two children.
The driver of the car was seriously injured and was receiving treatment in the Mid-Western Regional Hospital in Limerick yesterday.
Gardaí at Roxboro Road Garda station are investigating the collision.
In Cavan, a motorcyclist died after he hit a ditch at Legaginny, Ballinagh. Kevin Woodward (19), Annagh, Cornafean, died at about 10.15pm on Sunday when his motorbike hit the embankment just outside Ballinagh.
Their deaths bring to five the number of people killed in road accidents at the weekend.
Declan Boyce (25), Kinard, Legan, Co Longford, died early on Sunday when his four-wheel drive vehicle crashed at Ballygarvey Beg, Rathowen, Co Westmeath.
On Saturday evening, a pedestrian, Bernard Smyth (46), Rathbeale Road, Swords, Co Dublin, died after he was hit by a car near his home.
He was taken to Beaumont Hospital, where he died.
Earlier that day, Brendan Moloney (21), Main Street, Broadford, Co Clare, died after the car he was driving struck a wall at Kilmore near Broadford.
