Five men have been refused bail after they appeared in court on charges of robbing a supermarket in Athy, Co Kildare, last night.
The five appeared before Dublin District Court charged with robbing Brendan Canavan of a substantial sum of cash and cigarettes at this Gala Shop, Dun Brinn, Athy.
They were Myles (Miley) Connors (35), Glenshane Lawns, Tallaght; William Connors (30), Dreihid Carbury, Kildare; Thomas Kiely (19) Ballyowen Lane, Lucan; Daniel Connors (24), Sundale Park, Tallaght, and his brother Paddy Connors (27), Fonthill Road, Clondalkin.
The court heard that four of the men made no reply after they were charged. Daniel Connors said: "Not a bother, thank you."
Gardaí objected to bail because of the seriousness of the offence, the possibility of interference with witnesses and because they had allegedly tried to evade arrest.
The court heard a number of people allegedly went into the shop with a sledgehammer and threatened the owner.
They allegedly left with a considerable amount of money and changed the number plates on the car they were driving before trying to evade arrest by allegedly ramming two garda cars.
Judge Hugh O'Donnell refused bail in the case of each of the defendants. All were remanded to appear before Cloverhill District Court on Friday next, November 24 th.
