Five people, including two children, were slightly wounded when an explosive device detonated in one of Moscow's busiest metro stations today.

There are no reports of any fatalities.

The explosion occurred at around 3.50 p.m. Irish time at the busy Moscow Belarusskaya underground railway station, a major transport hub for the Russian capital.

An explosive device, equivalent to 200 grammes of TNT explosive according to Moscow emergency services cited by Interfax news agency, was placed under a bench.

Moscow police also discovered what appeared to resemble an explosive device on the railway tracks at the nearby Belarusskaya railway station.

Today’s explosion comes seven months after a vicious blast tore through a central Moscow underpass, killing 13 people and injuring dozens.

No responsibility was ever claimed for that explosion, initially blamed on Chechen guerrillas. Police later pointed the finger at criminal groups fighting for their share of protection rackets.
