At least 15 homes and a number of commercial premises in south Co Dublin were damaged in flash flooding when a stream burst its banks after torrential rain.
Houses and commercial premises in the Stillorgan, Sandyford, Blackrock and Leopardstown areas were affected when the Maretimo stream burst its banks at four areas after an intensive downpour.
The Green Line of the Luas was also affected and services were restricted for about an hour shortly after 10am because of flooding at the Stillorgan stop. Flooded roads were also reported in Swords, Co Dublin.
The areas most affected included Avondale, Leopardstown, Orpen Green and The Cloisters, just off Carysfort Avenue in Blackrock. The Maretimo burst its banks because of the intensity of the downpour. Flood waters up to two feet deep damaged a number of houses and commercial premises.
Director of services for Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown Council Frank Austin said the council had responded immediately when notified of the flash flooding.
"Heavy localised rain caused flash flooding which resulted in the Maretimo stream overflowing its banks at a number of points," Mr Austin said.
He said the council sent a crew of 10 to the scene, along with a mobile pump and sandbags. Council engineers were at the scene yesterday evening and a full assessment of the damage is expected today.
Plans are to be brought to the council in September to improve drainage at the stream.
At least 15 homes and a number of commercial premises were reported flooded, but the figure was expected to be much higher by the time the final impact of the flood was assessed.
There were reports that the intensity of the floods resulted in manholes bursting open and turning into fountains.
Services on the Luas Green Line were interrupted for an hour because of flood water on the line at Stillorgan.
There was no service from Balally to Sandyford for about an hour, but a loop service operated from St Stephen's Green to Balally.
