A multi-agency response haas been called for this morning after fresh flooding in Cushendall on the Co Antrim coast.

At least 10 homes were flooded when the River Dall burst its banks during heavy rain last night. A woman and her pregnant daughter had to be rescued from their home by firefighters when the floodwater reached four feet.

As the water receded and clearing up got underway, local Moyle councillor Oliver McMullan called for action to prevent it happening again.

"We have not learned the lessons from the 1990s when there was bad flooding. What we need is a multi-agency approach - some of these houses have been flooded several times.

"The problem is water coming down off the mountains in bigger volumes," the Sinn Féin councillor said.

He added that a wall or barrier was promised to prevent the house where the mother and daughter were rescued from being flooded when the river level rose, but that nothing had been done.

Cushendall was the latest area to be hit by flooding, following on from east Belfast, North Down and Omagh in the past fortnight.
