The problems faced by commuters in Dublin, Meath, Wicklow and Kildare last night as they tried to get home through the floods are set to continue throughout the weekend.

Thousands of commuters were stuck for hours in traffic on roads in all four counties. DART and rail passengers were also affected as sections of rail lines were closed completely.

There will be no DART service between Dalkey and Greystones all day today following yesterday's landslide on to the line at Killiney.

Services have been suspended since yesterday morning and a spokesman for Iarnrod Eireann, Mr Barry Kenny, said last night it was uncertain if the service would be restored tomorrow. "The tracks have now been cleared, but the rocks above are still insecure and another slide is a possibility."

Late-night services are also affected and are currently operating from Pearse Street to Howth and Connolly to Dalkey only.

The Arklow and Rosslare services were also suspended yesterday but resumed last night. Mr Kenny said it was possible to run the trains on the line but not the DART as the overhead power lines had to be shut off in order to allow work on securing the land overhead to continue.

The Dublin-Maynooth rail line, which was closed all day after flooding yesterday morning at Cabra and Glasnevin, was reopened shortly after 5 p.m., bringing relief to many Kildare commuters.

The Sligo service, which uses the same line, also returned to normal last night although there were delays at the points which were flooded.

Many of the roads throughout east Leinster were flooded yesterday, with some still impassable last night and into the early hours today.

Mr Trevor Keegan of AA Roadwatch said most main roads were usable, "with caution" last night, but many back roads around west Dublin, north county Dublin and Kildare were "quite badly flooded and impassable".

In Dublin, the N1 at Blakes Cross was virtually impassable last night due to the flooding. Traffic was reduced to one lane and there were three-hour tailbacks in each direction.

The Old Airport Road was blocked and Cabra Cross was also impassable. The back road from Swords to Ashbourne was flooded but passable as were the Strawberry Beds in Lucan, the coast road in Blackrock and Blanchardstown Road North. Flooding also hit Finglas at the Ballycoolen Road and the Kilreask area on the St Margaret's Road.

In Kildare, the Clane to Celbridge road deteriorated during the day and was completely closed by the floods last night. The Straffan to Celbridge and Straffan to Ardraf routes were also flooded, adding to the delays for motorists.

Meath was doubly afflicted by flooding between Duleek and Julianstown and a five-milelong oil spill on the Summerhill road out of Dunboyne.

The flooding on the N11 in Wexford which caused difficulties for motorists yesterday morning and afternoon had abated last night.
