Sweeping floods caused by heavy monsoon rains have killed at least 88 people and stranded more than 100,000 in Pakistan's southern Sindh province, government officials and the army said today.
A provincial government official put the latest death toll at 88, while a statement by the Pakistani army, which is involved in rescue operations, said 100,000 people had been stranded in at least seven districts.
"The personnel of the Pakistan army have so far rescued over 30,000 people stranded in floods and shifted them to 56 relief camps in Badin district," the military's Inter Services Public Relations office said in a statement.
Badin lies 190 kilometres east of the southern port city of Karachi, where heavy rains flooded roads, causing hour-long traffic jams and power outages.
The provincial government said in a statement more than 32,000 houses had been fully or partially damaged in cities and towns including Karachi, Hyderabad, Dadu, Thatta and Larkana.
Mr Chaudhry Qamaruz Zaman, chief of Pakistan's meteorological office, told Reuters the rains would continue for another 24 hours to 36 hours.
