The flowers left outside the royal palaces in tribute to Princess Diana will be given to the sick, the old and to children, a British government spokesman said yesterday. Young people will be asked to help gather the fresh flowers from the gates of Kensington Palace, Buckingham Palace and St James's Palace.
The flowers, estimated to be made up of a million bouquets, will not be moved until tomorrow to allow more people to lay tributes.
Gifts such as teddy bears and even bottles of champagne would also be passed on to old people's homes, hospitals and similar organisations. But the cards, personal messages and poems left with the flowers and tokens, would be kept, said the spokesman.
