Iran's foreign minister said yesterday that Iran and Egypt, long at odds over Egypt's relations with Israel, agreed on the need to tackle terrorism at its roots.

"There was agreement on opinions and points of view as to how to deal with the issue of terrorism," Mr Kamal Kharrazi told reporters after meeting Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak.

"We should recognise the roots of this phenomenon to dry them up," he said, adding that the West should differentiate between terrorism and legitimate resistance to occupation.

He called on Arab and Islamic states to work together to fight verbal attacks against Islam.

He also said that sour relations between Egypt and Iran were improving.

Iran broke relations with Egypt after the late Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomein denounced Egypt for signing the Camp David peace accords with Israel in 1978.

The two countries have slowly improved relations over the past few years but Iran still honours the assassin of late Egyptian President Anwar Sadat by naming a Tehran street after him.
