A significant portion of the increase in funding for the Department of Health and Children will finance the running of the new Food Safety Authority of Ireland. But the exact sum is not expected to be confirmed until nearer Budget day. As it is a new body - it has only been in an interim form this year - it will come under a special Budget heading. This autumn a three-year corporate plan for the FSAI was submitted to Government which, it is understood, requires an annual budget of more than £10 million to resource it fully.
