Ford has settled a lawsuit in which it accused Italian carmaker Ferrari of infringing its trademark for the popular F-150 truck with the original name of its new Formula One car.

Ford has dropped the case, according to a filing with the US district court in Detroit, with Ferrari agreeing for a second time to tweak the name of the race car so it will now be called Ferrari 150 Italia.

When the car for this year's racing season was launched in January, it was nicknamed F150 to celebrate this year's festivities for 150 years of Italian unity.

After Ford first filed the lawsuit on February 9th, the Italians announced that the full name of the car - Ferrari F150th Italia - would now be used.

Ford, which complained that Ferrari also used a logo that bore a striking resemblance to the Ford F-150 - the top-selling vehicle in the United States - was still not satisfied.

Ford spokeswoman Anne Marie Gattari said the new name "still contained F and 150," and that change "was not acceptable to us."

In a very tongue-in-cheek article on their website (www.ferrari.com) today, Ferrari said the new official name would be Ferrari 150 Italia with the Italian way of communicating 'th' instead of the English method.

"In order to avoid the slightest risk of anyone confusing a Formula 1 car with a pick-up truck, for their part, the men from Maranello have decided that the car will lose the F," it said.

"Therefore the name will now read as the Ferrari 150 Italia, which should make it clear even to the thickest of people."

Ms Gattari added: "We're obviously pleased that we were able to resolve this amicably."
