Detectives have carried out a forensic examination at the Donegal home of a seven-year-old girl who died on Wednesday.
The examination followed an inconclusive post-mortem on Rhona Young, who collapsed on Tuesday night while being taken to Letterkenny General Hospital with what her mother described as flu-like symptoms. Her condition deteriorated in hospital and she died the following evening after suffering cardiac arrest.
In keeping with normal practice in such cases, a post-mortem was ordered, and carried out in Dublin on Thursday by the Deputy State Pathologist, Dr Marie Cassidy.
This was followed yesterday by the technical examination of the child's home in Leck Cottages, a small housing estate on the outskirts of Letterkenny. Forensic detectives from Dublin spent about three hours in the house and took away a number of items.
A statement by the North Western Health Board said that from the time of her admission to hospital, the child was under constant monitoring.
"Unfortunately, her condition deteriorated over the following 24 hours, and despite the best efforts of the resuscitation team, she was pronounced dead at 5 p.m. on Wednesday."
The board declined further comment, saying the matter was now a coroner's case.
Meningitis was initially suspected as a cause of the illness, but this has been ruled out.
A consultant at the hospital said she had low blood pressure and was "pale" when admitted. However, the post-mortem did not establish a clear cause of death.
Rhona was the second-youngest of eight children, and attended Ballyraine National School.
