Former Chechen president Mr Zelimkhan Yandarbiyev has been reported killed in a car explosion in Qatar.
Qatari police official Mr Haman Ali al-Misnad confirmed his death in the surgical intensive care
unit at Hamad Hospital in the capital Doha where Mr Yandarbiyev had been taken.
Qatar-based Al Jazeera television earlier said Mr Yandarbiyev was seriously injured after his car was hit by a blast in Doha and that two people travelling with him had been killed. The station gave no other details.
In 1996, Mr Yandarbiyev dismissed reports of his death as the "wishful thinking" of his Russian opponents.
"A human being can only plan, but it is God who decides," Mr Yandarbiyev said. "As you can see, talk of my death has turned out to be exaggerated."
