A former garda sergeant who headed the traffic department in the south-east in the mid-1990s was awarded more than £80,000 compensation by the High Court yesterday.
The award was for serious leg injuries sustained after the Garda vehicle of Sgt Noel W. Harty (now retired) was driven at him by a woman he had just arrested in July 1995.
The woman was put in the back of the Garda car but got into the front and drove the vehicle at him as he attempted to make a mobile phone call outside. He ran in front of the car to prevent it moving off, but the front wheel crushed his leg.
