Adelaide - The giant balloon of US adventurer Steve Fossett floated silently high over the Australian outback yesterday, on the second day of a new attempt to be the first to fly a balloon solo and non-stop around the world.
By late yesterday Fossett's high-altitude balloon was headed for Australia's east coast and the high-risk Pacific Ocean, having passed over the desert of Western Australia's Nullarbor Plain, which derives its name from the Latin for "no tree", and the Great Australian Bight.
