Webster Hubbell, a former confidant of President Clinton who went to jail on a Whitewater-related conviction, said Mr Kenneth Starr's investigators questioned him about Mrs Hillary Rodham Clinton's sex life, a report released yesterday said.

In its latest issue due out today, the New Yorker magazine quoted the former top US Justice Department official as saying "they wanted me to give them something new on the president and Hillary - primarily Hillary."

"They wanted to know about Hillary's sex life," he said of federal prosecutors who questioned him in 1995 about the 1993 suicide of Mr Vincent Foster, a close friend of the Clintons who worked as a White House lawyer.

"They specifically asked if Hillary and Vince had had an affair," Hubbell recalled. He told prosecutors he was certain they had not. "I was surprised," he said, about the line of questioning. "For one thing, I think it's awful personal. And I don't think it's anybody's business."
