Gardaí investigating a fire in an apartment complex in Enniscorthy, Co Wexford, have ruled out foul play.

Up to 80 people had to be evacuated from the Platform One complex at Railway Square in the town on Tuesday night after a blaze threatened the building.

The local fire brigade received a call at 9.18pm when smoke was seen billowing from the building's roof. Emergency services, including two units of Enniscorthy fire brigade and one from Wexford, rushed to the scene, and found the roof engulfed in flames within 10 minutes of the call-out.

Gardaí cordoned off the area, diverted traffic, and restrained residents from trying to retrieve personal items.

The complex was home to many families, mostly foreign nationals, who looked on in shock as firemen battled the fire.

The blaze was eventually brought under control a little under three hours later, prompting gardaí to allow families living in some ground-floor apartments which were unaffected by the fire back into their homes.

However, about half an hour after the last fire tender left the scene, a fresh blaze broke out, and fire services had to be recalled. This fire was extinguished but not before another two apartments were damaged.

The fire services remained at the scene until approximately 3.30am yesterday.

In the meantime, most of the families were accommodated for the night either by friends or family, at a hostel to the back of the complex and in a nearby hotel.

Gardaí believe the blaze started in the attic above a top-floor apartment.
