The man, reported to have been in his 40s, was found lying in Frederick Lane in the north of the city at about 11.30 p.m. on Tuesday.

He was taken to the Mater Hospital where he was treated for head injuries but died a short time afterwards.

Gardaí are appealing to anyone with any information about the man's death to contact them at Fitzgibbon Street station at 01-6668400.

In a separate incident the body of a woman, believed to have been in her mid-40s or early 50s, was taken from the Tolka river yesterday morning.

The body was taken from the river at Tolka Bridge in Drumcondra, Dublin, at about 9.20 a.m. and removed to the City Morgue, where a post-mortem was due to be carried out yesterday evening.

Gardaí at Mountjoy station are seeking help in identifying the woman. who is described as 5 feet 2 inches in height, of stocky build with dark hair.

When discovered she was clothed only in black slacks and black bra.

A man in his 30s has been arrested in connection with the death of a man in Dublin's south inner city at the weekend.

He was being detained in Pearse Street Garda station last night under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.

Mr Michael O'Brien (53) died last Friday evening after an assault at his home in the Markievicz House flats, Pearse Street.

In Limerick, the body of a man in his 30s was found with gunshot wounds on a river walk.

The discovery was made yesterday morning by a man walking his dog near Condell Road.

Foul play is not suspected.
