Police have made four arrests in connection with the discovery of an apparent bomb-making factory used by dissident republicans in Strabane, Co Tyrone, last night.

Component parts of explosive devices were found during the search that began after reports of suspicious activity. Two men were arrested last night a further two arrests were made this morning.

Police have warned that a number of bombs may be stored in the Lisnafin Park area and appealed to the public not to approach any suspicious objects.

PSNI Chief Constable, Mr Hugh Orde, said the raid had dealt a serious blow to the activities of dissident republicans.

"The history of Strabane is that they have targeted members of the DPP who are now a lot safer as a result of our activity," he said.

"It's too early to say if these devices were meant for them but it's a distinct possibility.

"We have done the dissidents huge damage.

"To arrest eight people in 10 days will have a major impact on those organisations."

Northern Ireland Security Minister, Mr Ian Pearson, congratulated the PSNI on uncovering the bomb factory.

He said it was "a significant blow to the dissident republican movement in the North West and will have undoubtedly averted pointless loss of life".
