Four children have lost their lives in farm accidents so far this year.

Cumulative figures show 49 children have died on farms in the last nine years.

The statistics were described as "frightening" by the Minister of State for Labour, Trade and Consumer Affairs, Mr Tom Kitt.

Mr Frank Cunneen, chairman of the Health and Safety Authority, said progress had been made when the number of child fatalities dropped from seven in 1999 to two in 2000.

"However, 2001 has now witnessed the death of four children in just six months," he said.

The easing of restrictions following the foot-and-mouth crisis had put pressure on farmers to get things done in a shorter time and that could cause accidents.
