Four people have died and two are seriously injured following five separate road traffic collisions over the last 48 hours.
In Co Tipperary a motorcyclist in his early 20’s was killed when the bike he was riding collided with a car.
The collision happened at 3:15 this afternoon on the N7, about 2km from Roscrea.
Last night, a 27-year-old woman died after she was hit by a suspected drunk driver in Maynooth, Co Kildare.
The woman was hit by a car on the Dublin Road at about 8pm as she crossed the road. She was taken to Connolly Hospital in Blanchardstown but was pronounced dead.
“The driver of the car, a female in her 40's, was arrested at the scene for suspected drink driving,” a Garda spokesman said. She was later released and a file is to be prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.
A 30-year-old man died when the van he was driving went out of control on the R357 at at Raghrabeg, Shannonbridge, Co Offaly at 10.30am yesterday. He was the only occupant of the vehicle that crashed into a ditch and was pronounced dead at the scene. Gardaí named him today as Shane McKenna of Portnick Drive, Creagh, Ballinasloe, Co.Galway.
A 55-year-old man died after he was hit by a car in Limerick last night. The collision happened on Church Road, Coole, Kilteely shortly before 8pm, according to gardaí. The road was closed for a time after the incident but has since re-opened. Gardaí later named the victim as Jack Ryan of Knockderk, Pallasgreen, Co Limerick.
Meanwhile, gardaí this morning called for witnesses to come forward after a serious crash on the Kilteel Road, Rathcoole, Co Dublin shortly before 3.30am yesterday. A silver Toyota Glanza, with the registration number 96 D 63112, crashed into a lamp post.
Two occupants of the car, a man and woman in their 20's, were seriously injured and are being treated in Tallaght Hospital.
