Four men were in police custody in Belfast last night after an 18-year-old man was beaten to death in the Ballysillan area of north Belfast early yesterday morning.

The man, a Protestant, was named by police as David Samuel Phillips of Springvale Park in Belfast. The RUC said they did not yet know the motive for the attack but said the killing was not believed to be sectarian.

British Army experts yesterday defused a large bomb which had been abandoned by the roadside in Co Armagh. The device consisted of 1,400lbs of home made explosives, two booster tubes and a firing mechanism.
