Four people were taken to hospital yesterday evening following a two-car crash on a stretch of road that has become synonymous with traffic crashes in recent times.

The route is between the Arklow and Rathnew bypasses. This was the third collision on this single carriageway in less than a week, with a crash on Saturday morning last claiming the life of 23-year-old Colin Gannon from Arklow.

Two of the injured in yesterday's crash were American tourists, a husband and wife in their 60s. The wife was trapped in the car and had to be cut from the vehicle by firemen.

Their hired Nissan Almera car, which was travelling south, was in collision with a Hyundai Atoz - travelling in the opposite direction - whose two occupants were an elderly French woman and her grandson in his 20s. The four casualties were taken to St Vincent's hospital in Dublin but it is thought that their injuries are not life-threatening. Traffic had to be diverted on to side roads while the injured were being removed to hospital and gardaí examined the scene.
