The boy killed in Saturday's road accident in Co Galway has been named as John Kavanagh (8) of Lower Kilmacud Road, Dublin. The accident, which involved a car and a jeep, happened at 1.15 p.m. at Bauakill, Oughterard, on the main road to Clifden.

The boy was a rear-seat passenger in the car. The driver was seriously injured. She and the two occupants of the jeep, who were less seriously injured, were taken to University College Hospital in Galway.

A Co Down man, Mr James Heenin (28), was killed when his car crashed through a fence near the M1 Loughgall junction early on Saturday morning. At about 5.30 a.m. on Saturday, a man driving a stolen car was killed when the vehicle collided with a bus at Stewartstown road and Belsteel road in west Belfast. His passenger fled the scene. One person has been arrested.

A 30-year-old woman died at about 2.30 a.m. yesterday when her car ploughed into the front garden of a house near Comber, Co Down.

Five cars were involved in a pile-up on the main road from Belfast to Bangor, Co Down, one mile from Holywood, at 2.30 p.m. yesterday. One man who was cut from the wreckage of his car is understood to be in a critical condition in hospital.
