Four men were killed in accidents on the Republic's roads over the weekend, while the body of a fifth man was discovered early yesterday morning on a beach in Ballybunion, Co Kerry.
Gardaí named a man killed in a single-vehicle accident between Naas and Blessington shortly before 3am on Saturday as Robert Cullen (23), Lacken View, Naas, Co Kildare. He was a passenger in the car. Gardaí said the driver was taken to hospital suffering minor injuries.
Gardaí in Co Cork named John O'Mahony, Ballinascarthy, Co Cork, as the driver of an ambulance who died when the vehicle went out of control near Bandon shortly before 5am on Saturday.
A 19-year-old male pedestrian died when he was struck by a car at Lurgybrack, Letterkenny, Co Donegal, shortly after 4am on Sunday. His body was removed to Letterkenny General Hospital for a postmortem. The Letterkenny to Ballybofey Road will remain closed this morning and traffic diversions are in place.
At about noon yesterday Richard Britton, a married father of one from Enniskillen, Co Fermanagh, died when his motorbike went out of control during a road race near Ballybunnion, Co Kerry.
Onlookers reported seeing Mr Britton slow to around 80kph and signal a problem with his bike. He was about to stop when the bike, a Honda R250, went out of control and hit a pillar.
Also in Ballybunion the body of a man in his 30s was discovered early yesterday on a beach. A local walker discovered the body at around 7.45am in front of the Ballybunion Sea and Cliff Rescue Centre.
It appears the body was washed ashore and was not in the water long.
