The US army has said a Black Hawk helicopter crashed early this morning during a training mission and killed all four crew members.

The crash occurred about 1 a.m. near the military's Camp New Jersey, about 30 miles northwest of Kuwait City.

The soldiers' identification was withheld pending notification of next-of-kin.

The aircraft was part of the force that has been massed in this Gulf emirate for a possible invasion of Iraq. The crewmembers were the only personnel on board, the Army said.

It is the worst US helicopter crash overseas since January 30th, when four members of an elite aviation regiment were killed in a training mission seven miles east of Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan. That helicopter was an MH-60, an adapted version of the Black Hawk.

Thirty-nine soldiers and crewmembers have been killed and 38 injured in Black Hawk crashes since 1999.
