"Detectives are investigating the incident. Witnesses are being interviewed and statements taken. A 39-year-old Liverpool man has been arrested on suspicion of having inflicted the injuries.

"Robbie Fowler did not go to hospital," the spokesman added.

In July last year a 24-year-old man admitted punching Fowler in the toilets of a Liverpool hotel.

The England international, the subject of recent transfer speculation, was drinking at the Moat House Hotel following his last game of the season before suspension.

Paul Noon of Everton was originally accused of causing grievous bodily harm but the charge was later reduced to unlawful and malicious wounding.

He was jailed for 18 months after a court heard how Fowler suffered a broken nose, a chipped tooth, a black eye and bruising to the back of his head. PA
