Weimar - France and Germany sought yesterday to gloss over recent differences as their leaders held a summit meeting in the east German city of Weimar amid a new atmosphere of warmth, reports Denis Staunton.
After separate talks with President Chirac and the French Prime Minister, Mr Lionel Jospin, the German Chancellor, Dr Helmut Kohl, declared that the Franco-German relationship was as strong as ever. Both sides insisted that the euro was now on course for a successful launch in 1999.
