France has advised its nationals to leave Ivory Coast, which has been hit by anti-French riots over a peace accord reached in Paris for the war-torn country.

Foreign ministry spokesman Mr Francois Rivasseau also strongly discouraged travellers from going to the former French colony.

Some 16,000 French nationals live in the west African state, mainly in the economic capital Abidjan.

A mob of 800 people stormed the runway at Abidjan on Friday, triggering joint action by French and Ivorian troops in which one French soldier was seriously wounded.

Inside the terminal, some 300 French nationals due to be evacuated by their French employers on a charter flight, together with 500 passengers due to leave for Paris by a regular Air France flight, were trapped.

French gendarmes have been deployed in the terminal building to protect them, the armed forces announced in Paris. A French military spokesman said air traffic from Abidjan was slowly resuming following the violence.
